Das wäre mir persönlich zu hell. Ich finde helle Paisleys kommen immer etwas schlechter raus.

Look, I don't wanna be the same as everybody else. That's why I'm a Mod, see? I mean, you gotta be somebody, ain't ya, or you might as well jump in the sea and drown. (Jimmy Cooper, Quadrophenia)

If attending a teenage party, or in fact one of any other kind, I’d naturally wear my sharpest, coolest ensemble - possibly even my ivy-league outfit a GI got for me last year from his PX.

Young, good looking, crew cut, Ivy League, advertising exec type fruit holds the door back for me. I am evidently his idea of a character …

I wear ivy league jackets, white buckskin shoes// so many tickets down the scene honey....

How To Make The Perfect Ivy League Shirt

This can be achieved by combining the most appealing aspects of the standard issue button-down shirt offered by two fine contemporary shirtmakers, namely Mercer and Sons of Yarmouth, Maine, and Kamakura Shirts of Japan and Madison Avenue.

http://www.mercerandsons.com/

http://www.kamakurashirts.com/

From the pictures above, left to right and top to bottom -

1. This! The key element. The Mercer collar. Faultless, glorious and fulsome in its length, softness and kink of roll. The essence of the look perfectly executed.

2. A touch of refinement. This is what Kamakura offers. Pleasingly precise details. Affordable luxury. Genuine shell buttons. So much nicer than plastic, lending the shirt a soupcon of bespoke.

3. Tuckinability. Much as the Mercer 6 button placket gives pleasure to the purist there is nothing more irritating than the shirt which is too short for the torso. Wonderful though it is there is little doubt that the Mercer shirt is a bit skimpy on the body length front. Here’s another area where Kamakura have it sown up ; for while their 8 button placket may have Ivyists shaking their heads the glorious sense of well-being that a proper tuck-in gives a man should never be underestimated.

4. Unwrapping a new Mercer shirt I always check to see that the little triangular nub at the bottom of the placket has been sewn in. Not sure what this is called and I admit to never having seen this detail anywhere else. So charming and idiosyncratic is this detail that it allows me to overlook the short torso issue.

So there you have it - the formula for happiness - shirt-wise that is…
